the Mallard broke the world speed record for steam locomotives by going at 125.88 mph in 1938

  1. The Mallard could be called a ringer, her record breaking run was an "up yours" to the German Reichsban, which had previously held the speed record.

Other steam locomotives have reportedly made faster unofficial runs in regular service, like the PRR's S-1 experimental streamliner, or the Milwaukee's F7 Hudsons.

The Mallard made her speed run on a slight downgrade, with a minimal train, and special lubricants which rendered caused enough damage to require her immediate shopping for a rebuild post run.

In fact the Mallard's running gear was damaged enough that she had to be towed back to the shop dead in train.

She was restored to full operating condition in 1988 and subsequently made a few brief runs before being tucked away again in Britain's National Railway Museum.

A few of Mallard's A-4 sisters are preserved are do run from time to time, one is preserved in Canada, and the "Dwight D. Eisenhower" is here in the U.S.
